Picker Packer Jobs

Picker packer jobs move freight, stock, and other materials by hand or by utilizing light equipment to assist in loading or unloading freight. Material packing jobs can be physically demanding and repetitive so having the physical ability to be able to lift objects of various sizes and shapes is necessary. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, and stretching will be normal activities of the position. Working in different climates or weather conditions may also be a requirement, but will depend on the establishment. Some jobs might force workers to be exposed to odors, fumes, harmful materials and chemicals, loud noise, or hazardous machinery for prolonged periods. For safety these workers wear different types of safety gear, such as protective clothing, goggles, ear plugs, hard hats, gloves, and sometimes may even have other safety devices such as respirators.

Typically working for 8 hour shifts, a picker packer may also be required to work longer hours to meet certain deadlines. Some employers may call for materials to be moved around the clock, in overnight shifts, so customers are not disturbed during the normal business hours. Most employers prefer applicants that are 18 years old with general labor.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the largest majority of material movers worked within the wholesale trade or retail industries. Working in all parts of the country, job prospects during the 2006-2016 decade are expected to expand moderately. Improvements in equipment such as mechanical and automated storage solutions and retrieval systems will lessen the demand for picker packer jobs.
